A moment to unwind in the city.
Tucked along a lane in Kanda-Ogawamachi, ドース イスピーガ offers Portuguese sweets, from egg tarts with crisp pastry and rich cream to egg pudding and simple baked treats.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The pastry breaks with a light, crisp crackle, its many layers giving way to rich custard within. At ドース イスピーガ, a small shop tucked into a lane in Kanda-Ogawamachi, start with its signature pastel de nata, the Portuguese egg tart. Even after being taken away, the pastry keeps its fragrant crispness, while the filling balances sweetness with a faint freshness—a combination that leaves a lasting impression.
There is more to the shop than egg tarts. The display case holds Portuguese fresh and baked sweets made with careful attention to the balance of eggs, sugar and flour. They include tamago pudding, whose dense texture you can feel as you dig in with a spoon, and traditional pão de ló, a cake often regarded as one of the roots of castella. Cakes made with nuts, dried fruit and spices sit alongside simple baked treats with a touch of coconut for texture. Choosing among flavours that are not easy to come across in Japan is part of the appeal of a specialist shop.
Coffee is available at the shop and makes a natural match for the tarts and baked sweets. Take something away for an everyday treat or a gift, or pick out a few sweets that catch your eye and enjoy them slowly at home. Some popular items may sell out early in the day, so if there is a particular sweet you have in mind, try to stop by earlier.
